About color mixing

Additive vs subtractive

Screens mix light (additive): red+green+blue trends toward white. Paint mixes pigment (subtractive) toward black.

Why not just average

Averaging directly in RGB makes colors muddy and dark. Switch to "Linear light" to interpolate in linear light and keep saturation, closer to real overlays in design software; the other modes (multiply / screen / etc.) follow the W3C Compositing & Blending standard formulas, matching Photoshop layer blending.

About this tool

  • Add 2–4 colors and drag the weight sliders to set each one's share in the mix.
  • Blend modes include Normal / Multiply / Screen to mimic different overlays.
  • Want a lightness ramp? Send the result to Color Scale to pull a 50–950 set at once.
